"Alhamdulillah" - Motivational Message by Joana Saahirah
7:37

Having lived and performed in Egypt for almost a decade meant three things:

1. The beginning of my international career in Egyptian Oriental and Folkloric Dance;

2. An in-depth knowledge and love for Egyptian Dance, Music, and Culture;

3. A deep, often dramatic, shift in the way I saw myself, the world, and life.

One of the most challenging aspects of living and working, as a foreigner, in a different culture, is the shock between the values we carry within and the values that culture proposes or, frequently, imposes upon us.

Living and performing in Egypt, in a state of total immersion, for so many years, meant I was confronted with attitudes I couldn´t understand. Example: the omnipresent "Alhamdulillah", an Islamic expression that means "praise be to God" or "thanks, God".

 I was annoyed - even revolted - at the expression "Alhamdulillah", tossed around, for all reasons and no apparent reason, in the daily life of Egyptians.

Someone died - "Alhamdulillah".

Someone got robbed - "Alhamdulillah".

Someone was abused - "Alhamdulillah".

Someone was lied to - "Alhamdullilah".

Someone fell in a hole and broke both legs - "Alhamdullilah".

I interpreted it as passivity, subservience, a blind acceptance of life´s injustices; a weakness of character. I was, let´s face it, operating from the place of the colonizer who always knows better than the natives of the country.

I was also, in my defense, observing life with an intelligent and critical gaze.

It took years of experience, observation, and reflection for me to understand what I now call "UNCONDITIONAL ALHAMDULILLAH" or Unconditional Gratitude.

Replace the word "God" ("Allah" in Arabic) with Life, Life Force, or whatever you may like to call it.

The question is: there´s a key, a magical key, to understanding this expression; and there´s value in realizing why Egyptians apply it in moments of joy and moments of tragedy.

In this Blog Audio Post, a MOTIVATIONAL MESSAGE usually delivered inside Joana Saahirah´s Signature Course, I share the real meaning of "Alhamdulillah", a discovery that changed me and my life. I hope it inspires and empowers you, as well.
