"The Private, Public, Secret & Mythical History of Egyptian Dance"
(History Masterclass by Sherifa Zuhur)
Much of the history of Egyptian dance was taught in the West through a filter or a lens of made-up history – “wishstory” – intensely colored by Orientalism, and ignorance of and disdain for an Arab Muslim country, and reverence for ancient Egyptian culture.
This was intensified by the inability to use local sources, and also local sources’ discomfort or shame over public dancing.
In this lecture, Sherifa Zuhur will review key points of this history during which dance transitioned, uncomfortably from entertainment in private to more public spaces, and which aspects of the dance remain, unquestionably part of the legacy of the Egyptian common people, the "sha’b".
The replay of a live masterclass recommended for dancers who want to educate themselves; dancers who know that knowledge is power.
