The most common Myths about Egyptian Dance (and their debunking)
Myth #2 - Egyptian Dance is Exotic and made for a few.
When I started to work as a professional Oriental Dancer, I made a point in promoting the dance, the culture, and the reason why I thought it was for everyone. I performed on television often, I was interviewed by the press, I organized workshops, performances and lectures and, basically, I put Egyptian Dance on the map in my country.
One of the teachers I admired the most at the time told me two things that turned out to be complete nonsense:
1. Don´t do it. You´re not ready. (she stopped talking to me when she realized I wasn´t going to stop, like she´d told me to)
2. Egyptian Dance is not meant to be shared with everybody. It´s made for a select group of women. It´s hermetic and made for a few.
Both statements turned out to be lies. I knew they were lies back then and, now, I can only confirm it.
I moved forward and created a career only a few can dream of; and I´ve seen Egyptian Dance growing, touching men and women´s hearts, children, young and older people, Egyptians and foreigners, all over the globe.
Although the "outsiders" (what I call people who are not involved in this field in a deep manner) consider it exotic and distant, the truth is Egyptian Dance is human and, therefore, universal.
Yes, it´s quintessentially Egyptian.
Yes, it´s immersed with Egyptian History, Culture, and Mentality.
Yes, it requires the study of the context behind it.
Yet, beyond all the study, the context, and the specific characteristics that bring Egypt and its identity to the world, Egyptian Dance is universal. It speaks to and from the human soul.
It´s not made for a special club.
It´s not made only for women.
It´s not made to be practiced in secret, as if it was something forbidden, or in an underground movement.
It´s not made to be hidden, hermetic, unavailable, only for a few.
Egyptian Dance is a Human Language, a religious art form in the truest sense of the word - "religare"=to reconnect, to reunite the parts that have been disconnected.
To reconnect what with what, you may ask?
To reconnect your physical body with your emotional, mental, and spiritual body; to reconnect the East and the West; to reconnect the lost parts of ourselves - the silly parts, the beautiful and the ugly, the parts we´re ashamed of with the parts that can heal the parts we´re ashamed of, the light and the darkness; to reconnect the lower body - our connection to the Earth - with the upper body - our connection to the Sky.
To reconnect us with our - almost lost - humanity. To remind us of what it means to be human.
I thank that teacher, back then, for those false statements for they turned out to be the challenges I embraced, the ones that made me and my name, the mission and the vision I continue to live after more than 20 years in this field.
Unless you´re an alien, this may be your dance.
What brings me to the question: why am I excluding aliens, will I be cancelled for this? (suddenly, I´m considering to open an Egyptian Dance School in Mars).
