3 (weird but efficient) Steps to Awaken your Creativity

Oh, boy. Where do I start?

Let´s go from the beginning, a very good place to start.

I´ve been what my friends/family/man call a "compulsive creator" since I´ve known myself.

Even before I got into Ballet School, at 5 years old, I was already drawing, singing, dancing - aka Cute Monkey Business -, performing for my colleagues - aka Cute Gibbery Improvised Theatre Plays - and doing Nude Presentations (NOT KIDDING) during nap time.

As soon as the kindergarten ladies left us, to take their after-lunch Portuguese "bica" (a word we use for "expresso") at the local cafeteria, I´d get up from my mattress and do my little peep show.

Eventually, I quit the nude thing - to the dismay of my bank account - but I kept creating. Every day. All-day.

I´ve created thousands of shows, choreographies, and classes; I´ve worked all over the world; written and published articles and books; I´ve been created a pioneering platform & school; I´ve been a tireless creator of my own dreams. More than a dreamer, a DOER.

Creativity is about the way we build ourselves, our daily routines, our work, personal relationships, homes, dreams, life. For me, that´s the essence of Creativity - the ability to CREATE THE LIFE OF OUR DREAMS.

That´s why Creativity is my biggest cup of tea; that´s why I´m sharing, fresh out of a full moon, 3 (weird but efficient) steps to awaken your Creativity.

Dig in:

1. Lose your fear of " looking ridiculous", whatever "ridiculous" mean.

When we´re not afraid of looking ridiculous or, to be more exact, when we don´t even adopt the concept of "ridiculous", we become free.

We play and dare more; we have fun, free from the pressure of having to be or act "perfect"; we´re comfortable with falling, if necessary, only to rise up and jump into the Unknown. Again and again.

This fearless attitude opens creative doors that´ll surprise the creatives amongst the most creative. Try it, you´ll see for yourself.

2. Look at reality from different angles while preserving your identity.

Most of us tend to one extreme - we´re either followers, copy-cats, attentive observers of other people´s creations/lives or we´re blind, excessively self-centered doers who refuse to look outside our private bubble.

I believe there´s gold in the middle.

Cultivating our identity - who I am, what I feel, want, and think; my soul´s purpose - while learning and getting inspired by the world around us can be a key for never-ending creativity.

As I often say: watch, listen, learn from others and, then, go ahead and do your thing.

 3. Embrace failure & an "adventurer" mindset.

Who doesn´t like formulas and infallible results?

The lazybones residing in us, even if in small proportions, would rather have someone tell us what to do and how to do it than figuring it out for ourselves.

But that´s not how creativity, or life, roll.

Great creative projects and great lives come from experimentation; doing and failing; learning from direct experience.

Instead of being scared of mistakes, failure, and the Unknown, I suggest you embrace them. Above all, adopt an "adventurer" mindset, an attitude of excitement towards each new venture, project, dream.

Do I know, when I start writing, how a book will turn out? Of course, I don´t. That´s part of the thrill of writing it.

Do I know, when I begin working on new choreographies, how they´ll be in the end? Of course, I don´t. That´s part of the thrill of creating them.

Do we know, when we fall in love, how that relationship is going to unfold? Of course, we don´t. That´s part of the thrill of loving and being loved, the adventure of creating a life together.

I´ll not beat around the bush: life is a great adventure. Please, do yourself and the world a favor and start seeing CREATIVITY as such: a fun, unpredictable, wondrous adventure.

I promise you won´t regret the ride.
