Module #3

(last module)

How to Integrate Verticality
(additional support to the bonus class you can watch, above)

1. Communicate Horizontally and Vertically.

Horizontal Communication:
Communicate with the world at large - be sociable, kind, and interested in what the world, with all its wonders and imperfections, can teach you.

Vertical Communication:
Communicate with yourself; open your 7th chakra, the center of energy that connects the earth to the sky, through consistent meditation, healthy evasions, and a whole-hearted practice of Egyptian Dance.

2. Be aware of the Vertical Line that divides your body in two, and connects you to the earth and the sky.

Be conscious of it. Visualize it in your dance practice. Use it as a reference in your dance.

3. Have a Spiritual Practice that makes sense to you.

You don´t need to profess a religion or join a cult - I´m suggesting that you find some sort of spiritual practice that feeds your soul and connects you to something Higher.

For me, that´s Meditation, Walks in Nature, and Volunteer Work (helping others for the sake of helping them, with no benefit gained for myself except for the joy of helping). Pick a practice that fills your soul. And do it consistently.

4. Be clear about your Spiritual, or Ethical, Values. And live by them.

For me, that´s Honesty, Courage, Self-Respect, and Kindness. They´re invisible assets but they´re powerful because they guide and sustain me. They also ground me, make me feel peaceful and clear about my place in the world.

What are the Spiritual, or Ethical, Values that rule your Life?
Name them. Write them in your journal. Connect with them. Check if you´re living according to them.

5. Healthy Evasions.

Evading ourselves, in small bites, can be a life-saver. And reality can be too much to handle, at all times. Simultaneously, we feel an inherent need to reconnect to our soul, and some evasions, like Egyptian Dance, can provide that.

Evasion - from the Latin "ex-vadere" (to walk away or escape) - is an essential part of dance, life, and "Tarab".

The art resides in picking evasions that offer the respite we´re looking for and, at the same time, are good for us.

For me, that´s running, yoga, meditation, Egyptian Dance (for myself, not for work), walking in nature, a happy sex life, watching a movie, baking, working the land, a good cup of coffee accompanied by a book.

What about you?
  • Pick your journal and write at least 5 evasions that allow you to "escape reality" and, simultaneously, are good for you. Then, incorporate at least 2 of them on your daily life.

Verticality Flow Sequence

Incorporate this Verticality Flow Sequence in your warm-ups or/and do it separately, to integrate the concept of Verticality.

"Dancing is not just
getting up painlessly,
like a leaf
blown on the wind;
Dancing is when you
tear your heart out
and
rise out of your body
to hang suspended
between worlds."
– Rumi
