Where does
"The Oriental Café" come from?
During the years when I performed and lived in Egypt, I fell in love with the fascinating world of "baladi coffee shops", places of meeting, escape, exaltation, reflection, communication and community.
Whenever I could, I´d sit at one of these national institutions, preferably close to a mosque with a good "muezzin" (the man who calls Muslims for the prayer), sip from an over-sweetened cup of tea, and talk with strangers.
I´d also listen to Om Kolthoum - me and those strangers, united through art - and watch life go by. Together.
We were different but one.
Those cafés taught me everything I needed to learn about respite, connection and universality. And now, I´m bringing those values to the world in the shape of a podcast which, I hope, will be as human (and memorable) as those meetings at random street cafés in Cairo.
Will you join me at the table?☕🥜
