Why did you fall in love with Egyptian Dance, in the first place?

(what made the cut in this life-long love story?)

- Tell me, if you can remember, why did you fall in love with this dance? - I asked her, observing the disorientation and the ambition in her steps.

She remained in silence, staring at the floor, squeezing her eyes, trying to rescue a lost memory from the neglected backyard of her mind.

- Why did you get yourself into this? - I insisted. - Do you remember?

Most  of us don´t remember. We lost track of why, where, and how we fell in love with Egyptian Dance.

The world, the mainstream teaching methods - or the lack of a method - are great at making us forget why we started; the hardship and struggle of being alive, the mouse wheel we´re on, and other devils, erase the traces of the past.

As a result, we dance to impose, to impress, to prove ourselves and our worthiness, to win, to be number 1 - whatever all of that means.

The joy is gone. The spontaneity is gone. The pleasure and the freedom that made us fall in love with Egyptian Dance are gone.
I believe there´s a moment in a dancer´s life when we have to stop and remember: why did I fall in love with this?

Then, we ought to move from there. Tell all the devils: go to hell, where you belong; smile from our womb; and fly.

P.S.: In this video, I´m improvising a mean tabla solo at the end of my latest USA and Canada tour.

I was sick - had been sick the entire tour - and exhausted; my hair made me look like a smashed banana (not a good look, I know); but I was happy to work on my biggest passion and to do the dance that brought me to life.

👉What about YOU, what made you fall in love with Egyptian Dance?
