What is "Modern Shaabi Dance"?
Modern Shaabi Dance is one of the most modern, controversial, and hip dance styles in the wide spectrum of Egyptian Dance & Culture.
It´s the dance of the people ("shaab"=people), their raw, public, often ecstatic or desperate expression.
It´s a cocktail of elements coming from Egyptian Culture, and sub-cultures - like the "Mawaled", the "Zar", and the "Sufi" -, as well as a meeting of the Eastern and Western world.
It´s a dance style that has been modernized, in recent years, in the streets of Egypt, specifically in the "Mahraghanat" (Festivals/Parties/Gatherings) where the youth gathers to create, go against the system, have fun, and express themselves.
It´s raw, out-of-the-box, creative, rule-breaking, fun, cathartic, savage, liberating, and empowering.
