What most Oriental Dancers don´t know
about a great Tabla Solo🥰
He was crazy and a genius; the bad boy of percussion in Cairo.
A force of nature, almost uncontrollable.
After one of our daily shows in Cairo, he came to my dressing room, knocked on the door - awkwardly -, bowed, and kissed my hand.
- Enti fanana, ya Joujou (You´re an Artist, oh Joujou). - He said, shy.
My main "taa´bal" (the percussionist who plays the tabla/darbouka) was the heartbeat of my orchestra, a fellow madman, and a soul partner.
He knew me and felt my heart like no other musician I´ve ever worked with.
That evening, we´d improvised, as we always did, our "Fadi", an open tabla solo created out of the mood of the moment.
I was particularly tired so, I did less. And because I did less, I did it better, more fully, intentionally.
Instead of trying to catch every beat, every doum and tak, every detail and silence, I chose, like an unexpected zen master, what I´d embody. My dance vocabulary was drastically cut - I did 50% less than I usually did - but I dance better, and more.
That extra space was filled. It was filled with my energy, my emotion, my mind, and my soul. Because I didn´t do too much, I could exist, fully.
He bowed and kissed my hand, backstage; we could still hear the applause of the audience, who was ecstatic.
Those words echoed in my mind: "enti fanana, ya Joujou" = "You´re an artist, oh Joujou".
That was all he said. Then, he left. I left. But that moment never left me.
That night, and that tabla solo, were a revelation: the secret sauce for a great tabla solo.
Secret Sauce: Quieting down the inner voice that tells you to do more because you´re not enough; using what makes sense in the music; doing less and doing it better.
