Here we go:
📌Tip #1
Become a Cocktail Master.
Meaning: mix permanent doses of dance practice and personal exploration (creativity).
Educate yourself and practice your dance - technique, choreography, combos, improvisation - but don´t forget to use your creativity.
📌Tip #2
Be Self-Centered.
Wait, don´t hate me yet. Keep reading.
Being self-centered in the context of Egyptian Dance means you´ll put your focus in yourself and in your dance.
Instead of wasting time and energy checking what everyone else is doing, comparing yourself to other dancers, or waiting for the miracle formula that´ll make you a great dancer, focus on yourself, on your dance practice and projects.
📌Tip #3
Kill your darlings
What, Joana? Have you gone mad?
Wait a second. Breathe.
Killing your darlings mean being open to constructive criticism and growth.
Eliminate what´s not contributing to your evolution as a dancer. Let go of old belief patterns, addictions, and immaturity. Receive feedback and apply it. Allow yourself to let go of older versions of yourself so a new version can arise.
📌Tip #4
Smile from Within.
This is an exercise I often teach my students. It´s a part of a meditation but, here, I´m just sharing a glimpse of it.
Imagine you have a huge smile - shining and brave - on your belly. Smile from that place, from the gut; bring that open smile from your belly even* if you don´t feel like smiling at the moment.
Our brain responds to physiology. Mood can follow physical behavior - this is why dancing can change your mood, emotional state, and mindset.
First, we smile with our body - our gut - and, then, our mood follows.
Be the dancer who smiles from within - it´s magnetic.
📌Tip #5
Embrace the Shitty First Drafts
We´re hooked up on the illusion of "perfection" but, truth be told, there´s no such thing as a "perfect" dancer or a "perfect" dance piece.
Embrace the mistakes, the limitations, the ignorance and the light you carry within. Then, work from there.
See your dance as a draft - as shitty and wonderful as it can be - that you can work on continuously. And joyfully.
