"Maa´lema" tableau in Cairo, Egypt, with my musicians
In one of my study trips to Egypt, way before I moved there, I watched Fifi Abdou in a theater play.
In that play, she´d play the role of a "maa´lema", do an intermission and launched herself on stage, in full power, with an orchestra.
The play´s name was "Azemny´ya", the inspiration for the same tableau I´d do, a few years later, with my own orchestra.
In this video, you can see me in full "maa´lema" attire and attitude, doing a baladi piece that represents the universe of the "bint el balad", the "sit el kol", the "maa´lema".
I sing in this tableau.
I do a bit of baladi, a bit of saiidi within the baladi, and, at the end, a crazy tabla solo - aka "fadi" - you can´t see in this recording.
If you want a taste of what a "maa´lema" is and what she´ll invite you to embrace - in your dance and in your life -, watch this video.
